PERSONALITY:
although seemingly cordial and considerate, there is an implacable distance to masashi which most people cannot shake -- there is a certain emptiness behind every polite smile and courteous comment. though he possesses a dry humor and wit and works tirelessly and without complaint, his reservations about himself and his unbroken composure betray a lack of true warmth. his eyes, in particular, give off no light when he laughs.

all of these traits can be traced back to what masashi considers to be both his greatest safeguard and his eternal curse: a lack of trust in other people. having been betrayed several times and persistently hunted by the demon hunter organization, he has become rather dubious in his connections with other people. his sudden and mysterious bouts of inversion impulse also have a severe effect on his relationships, giving him ample reason to distance himself from others. he possess a dogged determination to survive, and thus his self-preservation instinct is exceptionally keen. though he loathes his abilities and what they have done to his lifestyle, he has become rather deft in their use, primarily because of their evasive properties, and his mind is alert and sharp, allowing him to see many possible outcomes in every situation. he can become rather violent under inversion impulse, but otherwise he keeps conflict to a minimum in other situations of confrontation, preferring a cloak of shadows.

of course, this does nothing for his goals of self-actualization and his need, as a human being, to connect with other people. because of this, masashi is haunted by a pervading melancholy and a deep-seated, painful weariness. he is tired of merely existing and wishes to find purpose in his life -- and it is in these rare moments of weakness in which his mask of aloofness slips and he bares his soul, becoming most vulnerable to resonance and betrayal alike.

he still clings to the hope that one day he can be a sincere, genuine person without consequence.



HISTORY:
the member of a relatively new family of hybrids living in fuyuki, masashi possesses fairly thick demon blood. as the scion of the shirokane line masashi was expected to inherit the family business and hone his powers, but he rejected the lifestyle of his bloodline and loathed his family's interference with his personal life. after he completed his secondary education, he moved out of the country, all the while struggling to maintain his fiercely fluctuating abilities.

when masashi was twenty-one years old, he received news that his father was found murdered, lying in a ditch on the outskirts of town with his chest smashed in. worried for his mother and sister, he decided to return to fuyuki city, if only for a short while. it was there that he encountered a member of the demon hunter organization and learned that they'd had their eye on his family; his father, in worry over his tumultuous son, had succumbed to inversion impulse, and had to be put down.

it was around this time when he began to see signs of impulse in his younger sister, who was battling not only her conflicted adolescence but also the death of her father and the effect the shirokane blood was having on her lifestyle. for a year he tried to watch out for her, searching for help to curb her impulses. but on one quiet winter night she went missing; the night of new years eve, she turned up dead.

signs of impulse began to reemerge in the grief-wracked masashi. in a blind frenzy, he began to work tirelessly at the mastery of his powers and abandoned his education. the catalyst of inversion impulse in the shirokane bloodline -- despair -- remained unknown to him, but aware of the existence of many other magical bloodlines in fuyuki, he has begun to search for a way to stop his impulses, all the while attempting to dodge execution from the demon hunter organization.

CRY OF THE GLASS LAKE is a shirokane family heirloom-- a katana with a blade that shimmers like a mirror. the physical sharpness and makeup of the sword itself is average, but because of its refractive properties, it is an excellent match for the shirokane bloodline's powers of light manipulation. it can store, hold, and reflect light according to the movements and commands of its wielder; therefore, it takes a quick mind and a highly dextrous body to make the most of it. the blade has a tendency to flash wildly as it is swung, making it difficult to track for the untrained eye.

ICTIOKINESIS [D]: the ability to create and/or manipulate light. masashi can manipulate light in up to a mile radius, but it is difficult for him to direct light in places out of his vision. it is easier for masashi to manipulate preexisting light, whether it be light he has absorbed or light that exists in his surroundings. this flexible spell has other abilities as well -- one could snuff out all light surrounding his or her body, swallowing them in a cloak of shadows, or change something's color by interfering with light waves.

MATERIALIZE [C]: the ability to manifest light as a physical substance. under masashi's control, light possesses the consistency and appearance of a thick glass. in battle masashi is especially fond of creating sharp spears of light which can be placed as traps or hurled through kinetic ability. it can also be used to create projectiles when reflected off of refractive objects, such as masashi's sword.

CONCENTRATE [C]: masashi can gather light in one area. normally upon release, his would cause the light to burst into a blinding flash; when combined with materialization, masashi can create shock waves with the impactive force of a grenade.

DISTORT [C]: by distorting the light waves around an oncoming force, masashi can bend its directional influence. the more force, the more distortion is necessary -- and the more mana is required.

GHOST STEP : a translocutive ability which allows masashi to maneuver at exceptionally high speeds. his body essentially begins to phase into light, allowing him to travel horizontal and vertical distances effortlessly; what would take him ten steps without this ability takes a single movement.

RAIL STAR : a spell which extols a large amount of prana and is an extension of the "concentrate" ability. masashi gathers all of the light in a hundred-foot radius into small clusters and detonates them all, creating a chain of explosions. these clusters can be directed before exploding, even into a horizontal rail gun-esque chain, but regardless the amount of mana used takes a huge toll on masashi's prana reserves.

GHOST FIELD : another high-energy spell, used as an assassination technique in the shirokane bloodline. the target is swathed in complete and deep darkness, but his or her form is spotlighted, allowing them to be spotted by the user. while the original purpose of this spell was to allow for an unpredictable attack, or to force the opponent to use a certain spell or tactic, masashi prefers to use it as a trump card for an easy escape. however, the concentration required to snuff out every light source for an extended period of time depletes masashi completely.
